Talking Grief: Anderson Cooper and President Biden

Talking Grief

…Anderson Cooper interviews President Biden

“You gotta come home, there’s been an accident.” It was 1972 when Joe Biden heard the news that changed his life forever: his wife Neilia and 13-month-old daughter Naomi were killed in a car crash. Decades later his beloved son Beau died of cancer. In this deeply personal interview President Biden reveals how he has found solace in his grief and learned to search for purpose beyond his pain.

Talking About Grief

Back in November of 2023, Anderson Cooper sat down with President Biden to interview him about his thoughts on grief for his “All There Is” podcast. Both Anderson and President Biden have experienced their share of grief, and so, if you missed this interview, I’d like to share it with you. (see link below)

In the interview, Anderson quotes a previous guest of his, Stephen Colbert, about his experience with grief. Stephen said:

People are afraid to talk about grief because they think it’s a trap of depression. Grief is a doorway to another you because you’re going to be a different person on the other side of it.

I’ve written books about a lot of things that people are afraid to talk about: shame, anger, and loss. So I can relate to what Colbert said here.

Through my own experiences with grief and loss, as well as the people I’ve counseled through the years, I’ve learned a lot about grief. One of my books (Return From Exile) is a road-map into and through the grieving process.

There are many things that we learn from the pain of grief. If handled well, God will use it in your life to change you into a better, more compassionate person, on the other side.

If you are struggling with a loss, whether recent or distant, I encourage you to slow down and embrace your grief. Move through it and become the person you were meant to be.
